My name is Karin, I am a licensed clinical social worker with several years of experience providing effective and compassionate psychotherapy. I am of Guatemalan heritage and bilingual in Spanish/English.
I utilize a Relational Cultural and Interpersonal Process Therapy approach in my work with clients. I work to foster a sense of safety, and collaboration with my clients in order to meet goals and create change. I hope to create a space where everyone can feel safe to be their true authentic selves.
My professional interests include:
Working with depression, anxiety, self-esteem building, trauma, resiliency, concerns/issues faced by historically marginalized communities, issues faced by neurodiverse individuals, identity development, relationship concerns, family of origin concerns, intergenerational trauma, body positivity, and working with grief/loss.
Professional/Career History:
I have spent the majority of my career working in various college counseling centers, with adults of all ages and concerns of all types. I have been part of multiple eating disorder consultation teams within these universities. I have also worked in community mental health, and agencies specializing in working with neurodiverse individuals. Prior to receiving my Master of Social Work I was involved in public health research, and community mentorship.
I have provided trainings/presentations in relational cultural therapy, case conceptualization, suicide prevention, working with diverse populations, and in effective case management.
Education:
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. I completed a concentration year master’s level internship and post-master’s residency at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Counseling Services.
I have received specialized training beyond my graduate degree. I have been trained in EMDR, DBT, CBT, trauma, resilience, and in LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy.
I consider professional development and continuing education integral to being an effective, and ethical therapist. You can trust if you choose to work with me I will stay on top of the latest and most effective therapeutic modalities.
